Iván López-Ibor, MD
Dr. Iván López-Ibor is a medical doctor with over four years of full clinical experience working as a treating physician in major psychiatric hospitals in Spain and the United States. His clinical work has spanned emergency psychiatry, acute inpatient care, and outpatient psychiatric services, with direct involvement in the management of mood disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, substance use disorders, ADHD, and OCD.
His approach is grounded in evidence-based psychopharmacology and structured clinical decision-making, developed through years of hands-on work in high-acuity psychiatric settings — managing acute psychiatric presentations, severe mental illness, treatment-resistant cases, and complex dual diagnosis situations.
Dr. López-Ibor is currently pursuing USMLE certification as part of his pathway toward formal psychiatric training in the United States.
Dr. Iván López-Ibor continues a multi-generational tradition in academic psychiatry. His grandfather, Prof. Juan José López-Ibor, was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century European psychiatry — serving as President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), contributing to international diagnostic classification systems, and shaping psychiatric education across Spain and Europe through his scientific work and leadership in major professional societies.
A López-Ibor strengthens ties between Spain, Miami, New York, and Tampa (Ybor City) through medicine and family legacy
Spanish physician Dr. Iván López-Ibor has begun a new stage of professional training in the United States, currently based in Miami where he is undertaking clinical observerships in psychiatry. In the coming weeks, he will continue his training in New York with the goal of entering a psychiatry residency program in the U.S.
Dr. Iván López-Ibor earned his medical degree from Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio and has gained clinical experience in several leading institutions in Spain, including Hospital Clínico Universitario Severo Ochoa (Leganés), Hospital Central de la Cruz Roja San José y Santa Adela, Clínica López-Ibor, Sanatorio del Dr. Esquerdo, and Clínica del Dr. León in Madrid.
He comes from a distinguished medical family. He is the grandson of Dr. Juan José López-Ibor, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Spanish psychiatry, founder of Actas Españolas de Psiquiatría and the López-Ibor Clinic in Madrid, and former President of the World Psychiatric Association.
This legacy continued with Dr. Juan José López-Ibor Aliño, who trained at leading international institutions in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, and later served as Secretary General and President of the World Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Luis José López-Ibor further expanded this tradition by incorporating clinical innovation. He trained in endovascular radiological therapy in Paris at leading institutions such as La Pitié-Salpêtrière and the Hospital of Vincennes. He later developed and implemented these techniques at Hospital Clínico San Carlos in Madrid, achieving significant clinical success in the treatment of stroke, vascular malformations, cerebrovascular accidents, and aneurysms.
Beyond medicine, his family history is also closely linked to the United States. Dr. Iván López-Ibor is a descendant of Vicente Martínez Ybor, the founder of Ybor City in Tampa, one of the most iconic centers of Spanish heritage in Florida.
Recently, Dr Iván López-Ibor visited Tampa and took part in a local event connected to the historical and cultural community of Ybor City on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the purchase of the land that gave rise to Ybor City by Vicente Martínez Ybor, reinforcing the connection between his personal journey, his family legacy, and the Spanish influence in the region. This adds a unique angle of local interest, linking contemporary medical training with Tampa’s historical roots.
Within this context, his move to the United States represents not only professional development but also a continuation of a cross-generational legacy, integrating European clinical tradition, medical innovation, and historical ties to the Hispanic community in the U.S.
His goal is to pursue a psychiatry residency in the United States, building an international profile focused on clinical excellence and cross-cultural integration in mental health care.
