"Cuando reflexiono sobre mi desarrollo personal como terapeuta y ser humano concienciado con la salud, me viene al recuerdo mi propia experiencia personal.
A lo largo de mi adolescencia padecí un sinfín de síntomas, incluyendo alergias, depresión, dolores de cabeza, calambres, artritis, fatiga y comportamientos destructivos que eran actos de sabotaje hacia mí misma. Fui rebotando de médicos a psicoterapeutas sin obtener respuestas claras sobre qué andaba mal conmigo. Años de apoyo psicológico y medicación produjeron algunos cambios, pero yo estaba lejos de encontrarme bien de salud.
Ya de joven adulta, comencé a hacerme esta pregunta: ¿Si estoy tomando la medicación correcta y haciendo psicoterapia, qué estoy haciendo mal para que persistan mis síntomas? Entonces empecé a leer libros sobre salud y autoayuda. El mensaje predominante era claro: para estar saludable uno tenía que comer vegetales, hacer ejercicio con regularidad, no fumar, limitar el consumo de alcohol y drogas, y evitar el stress. Hasta ese momento de mi vida, mi dieta había consistido en carne, patatas y alimentos ricos en azúcar y colesterol. No hacía ejercicio casi nunca, fumaba un paquete de cigarrillos diario, tomaba alcohol con asiduidad y consumía una cantidad respetable de drogas legales, prescritas por los médicos.
Descubrí que desear estar sano no es lo mismo que querer adoptar un estilo de vida más saludable, y que tampoco es lo mismo tener buena voluntad para adoptar nuevos hábitos que ser capaz de practicarlos. Necesité ayuda para pasar de los deseos a la práctica y hacer realmente ejercicio, dejar de fumar, limitar el consumo de alcohol y drogas, comer sano y aprender a desestresarme. Ese proceso de aprendizaje para pasar de unos hábitos perjudiciales a otros hábitos más beneficiosos para la salud se convirtió en una tarea vital que marcó mi educación formal e informal, mis relaciones personales y el rumbo de mi carrera profesional.
Tanto en mi formación universitaria como en mi entrenamiento en seminarios y talleres de trabajo, me enfoqué en el cómo hacer para cambiar el comportamiento. Experimenté muchas disciplinas psicológicas, incluyendo entrenamiento de sensibilización, conductismo, terapia gestalt, EST, hipnosis, talleres de comunicación y PNL. También busqué respuestas en el campo de la medicina alternativa, explorando la acupuntura, sistemas energéticos, homeopatía, nutrición y masaje. Con ello fui ganando conciencia de la unión inseparable que existe entre mente y cuerpo, y empecé a desarrollar un enfoque sistémico para trabajar en temas de salud.
Uno de los libros que más me influyeron fue Psychocybernetics, del cirujano plástico Maxwell Maltz, quien observó que algunas personas, después de una operación de cirugía plástica, seguían comportándose como si estuvieran deformadas o conservaran las cicatrices. Para ayudar a esos pacientes a adaptarse a su nueva imagen, el Dr. Maltz desarrolló una serie de ejercicios de visualización. Descubrió que las visualizaciones eran útiles para resolver las cicatrices psicológicas de sus pacientes. Animado por el éxito obtenido con pacientes de cirugía, aplicó las técnicas de visualización en otros campos. Yo quedé fascinada con el concepto de generar cambios de comportamiento por medio de un programa de visualizaciones, y empecé a incorporar ese trabajo en mi vida diaria.
Abriendo el camino más allá de las simples técnicas de visualización del Dr. Maltz, la Programación Neurolingüística (PNL) es un sistema de intervenciones prácticas, paso a paso, que permiten resolver problemas específicos de conducta y generar nuevos comportamientos. Las intervenciones de la PNL proporcionan una metodología eficaz para abordar problemas psicológicos concretos y para establecer un marco de trabajo que ayude a la persona a dar los pasos necesarios para cambiar determinados comportamientos y mejorar su salud.
A veces son necesarias intervenciones más complejas, si los problemas de salud son serios o hay un trasfondo psicológico importante. Cuando se trabaja con personas que padecen una enfermedad crónica o que pone en riesgo su vida, como el cáncer o el SIDA, conviene contemplar los aspectos sociales, psíquicos y fisiológicos de cada individuo. A lo largo de los años, he desarrollado varias intervenciones complejas para trabajar con esos problemas. Estas incluyen: Communicating with the Body, The Health Wheel que después seguí desarrollando y se convirtió en The Health Matrix, Mapping out the issue, Head-Heart-Gut-Crotch, Clearing Multiple Sets of Conflicting Beliefs entre otros procesos. Posteriormente mi entrenamiento y certificación en Acupuntura junto con mi larga experiencia en PNL se fusionaron y desarrollé un nuevo y efectivo programa que titulé Meta-Energetics y que vengo impartiendo igualmente en distintos países.
Mis seminarios y talleres están focalizados en la enseñanza y práctica de estos procesos, pero siempre siguiendo el liderazgo de los participantes del grupo. Al dictar un seminario avanzado de PNL para la salud, es tanto lo que se puede enseñar que he preferido desarrollar el programa de modo que como entrenadora pueda responder a las necesidades y expectativas de los participantes. Incluso aunque el material a cubrir sea el mismo, las demostraciones prácticas podrían ser diferentes en cada grupo, como es habitual en PNL.
En esta mi primera visita a España, espero poder ayudar a los participantes a conseguir sus objetivos y satisfacer sus deseos de aprender e incrementar sus herramientas de PNL para poder ayudar más todavía a sus pacientes.
