[ABSTRACT] The aim of this paper is to revise the historical development of the antidepressant treatment in the course of the last four decades with the purpose of knowing which is the current situation and what we lack to reach our expectations. While it is time to use new antidepressant compounds that will improve the therapeutic profile of the available agents , we can obtain at the present time better therapeutic results if we use as a reference the varied clinical subtypes that offer the depressive clinical picture correlated with certain biological markers. This approach is still insufficiently developed and in the future it will deserve a bigger effort of the investigation.El objetivo de este trabajo es revisar el desarrollo histórico del tratamiento antidepresivo en el transcurso de las últimas cuatro décadas con la finalidad de conocer cual es la situación actual y qué nos falta para alcanzar nuestra expectativas . Mientras llega la hora de acceder a fármacos antidepresivos que mejoren substancialmente el perfil terapéutico de los agentes disponibles en la actualidad, podemos obtener mayor rendimiento terapéutico utlizando como referencia los variados subtipos clÃnicos que ofrece la clÃnica depresiva correlacionados con determinadas alteraciones biológicas . Este abordaje está todavÃa insuficientemente desarrollado y en el futuro merecerá un mayor esfuerzo de la investigación.
